It has been a long journey for me - filled with psychological & financial stressors that have forced me to question my commitment to my chosen degree and field. There have been times when I question whether or not I am worthy to be offered such an opportunity and this year’s pandemic and the unfolding events are an example of that. However, through all of this I have found a love for the field of science, health and people. I recognize that I am incredibly lucky to have been given the opportunity to enter this field and every day, I aspire to remind myself of this. The field of medicine is often glamourized for the superficial aspects, yet one of the most important aspects of our job is to simply offer comfort to anyone who seeks it. Studying, and working in this field as a student has allowed me to grow and find further interests of mine. My career aspirations are often changing and relate to the constant exposure that I receive on a daily basis. However, currently I am interested in the field of (pediatrics) caring for children as I believe this is where my passion lies.
I have placed my aspirations in this field of work and I strongly believe that I am capable of becoming a great doctor if I dedicate myself to this entirely. This is in fact one of the reasons why I have chosen to apply to be a part of a cohort of final year health sciences students who will be completing their final year of studies in the Eden district of the Western Cape. Hopefully there I will be blessed with different opportunities to hone my skills as a student doctor and gain the confidence I need to offer a level of service that I believe people deserve. It has been a long journey for me to get here and I am excited to be reaching the end.
Being a doctor isn’t about money – it is about interest and ambition. Medical field isn’t the only way to make a difference – I went into medicine because I am interested in it – love interacting with people; interacting with them in a vulnerable way.
i want to graduate; then specialize in pediatrics or public health; trying out blocks and tried out public health – learnt how to create impact by doing it right. I followed a specialist in public health to learn about the job going forward. Realized the importance of public health.
We have had outreach clinics; did simple tests – and will do pediatrics later to see if this is something I want to do.
